Happy New Years! I hope you’re as excited for the upcoming year as I am. As with everything else, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on 2022 – the newsletter is no exception. Below is a recap of it all.

YOUR FIVE FAVORITES OF THE YEAR
REVIEWS OF 2022’S BIGGEST MOVIES
2022 was an amazing year for film – you’ll see so soon in my TOP 20 list for the year! The movies below all helped, in part, define the year. Chances are you’ve seen a bunch, whether in theaters or recently on streaming. You can check out my favorite reviews below!
FESTIVAL LIVING
This newsletter and your support have helped me access experiences this year that I never would have thought possible, chief of which was a sponsored weekend at the DUMBO Film Festival in Brooklyn, NY! Here’s to even greater experiences and festivals this year!
THE AWARDS
Remember when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars? More importantly, remember when I went 17/19 on predictions for the year? 2022 was a fun awards season and it has me excited for next year!
BIG STREAMING
One year into studying the film industry and I’m still constantly surprised at how much streaming has changed the landscape:
THE GREATS
Love letters to the greatest pioneers of the genre:
SOUTH ASIA
We looked globally this year as well, especially at the wide world of South Asian cinema. From my favorites to some unique pieces of history, I’m excited to keep digging into this rich art that holds a special place in my heart.
MOVIE MAKING MAGIC
We peeled back the layers of what making a movie actually looks like. From the VFX to the marketing to the box office, how does it all end up on the big screen?
THE BIGGER ISSUES
And lastly, we got a little political with it – tackling some of the thorniest and most controversial issues defining the medium.
A LOOK AT 2023
TONS!!! You can still expect weekly newsletters about these topics and more. I might even have time to up the volume – maybe tossing in an extra movie review a week?
But I have big hopes for the newsletter outside of that. Merch is certainly coming over the next few months. More festivals and premieres wherever possible. Interviews with people across the film industry. More content about books and TV. Expansions into video or audio content. And hopefully finding someone who’ll run an ad or two to fund all of this :D
.But thanks so much for sticking around till now, the support means the world. Here’s to 2023!
See you all again next week. Until then, please get in touch if you have any thoughts or suggestions you’d like to share. If you want to keep up with what I’m watching, follow me on Letterboxd @atharv_gupta.
